News India Live, Digital Desk: The Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved an important Greenfield Highway Project from Shillong in Meghalaya to Silchar in Assam. The total estimated cost of this 4-lane highway, 166.80 km, is around Rs 22,864 crore. This project will be completed under the PM Spaciness National Master Plan.
The purpose of this proposed highway is to promote tourism and economic development of the northeastern states. The Greenfield Access Controled National Highway-06 (NH-06) will spread from Mavalingkhunung near Shillong in Meghalaya to Panchgram near Silchar in Assam.
The construction of the high-speed corridor will lead to significant improvement in the traffic system between Guwahati and Silchar, which will strengthen connectivity to the mainland of Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and Barak Valley region of Assam. Travel time and distance will be reduced, as well as logistics capacity will also increase. This highway will provide better connectivity to major cement and coal production areas.
This highway will also improve connectivity of Guwahati Airport, Shillong Airport and Silchar Airport keeping in mind the needs of tourists. The completion of the project is expected to increase economic activities between Meghalaya and Assam.
It will pass through highway Ri Bhoi, Eastern Khasi Hills, Western Jayantia Hills, Eastern Jayantia Hills (Meghalaya) and Cachar districts of Assam. Its construction will reduce the pressure on existing traffic of NH-06 and improve connectivity to major national highways like NH-27, NH-106, NH-206 and NH-37.
This new highway will directly benefit cities like Guwahati, Shillong, Silchar, Diangpasoh, Ummulong, Framar, Khaliryot, Ratchera, Umkiang and Kalain.
