The rupee fell five paise to 85.53 per dollar in early trade on Monday. Investor sentiment was affected amid heavy demand for dollars from importers, withdrawal of foreign capital and soft sentiment in local stock markets, which put pressure on the local currency. In the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened on a weak note and fell at 85.53 against the American currency, which is five paise less than its previous closing price. The rupee closed at 85.48 against the US dollar on Friday.
