Former RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das has been appointed by the Central Government as Principal Secretary-2 of the Prime Minister. His appointment has been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). According to the notification of the Department of Personnel and Training (DOPT), their appointment will remain in force till the tenure of the Prime Minister or till further orders, whichever is first.
Shaktikanta Das: An experienced administrator
Shaktikanta Das is a former IAS officer of the 1980 batch Tamil Nadu cadre.
- In December 2018, he took over as RBI Governor and retired from the post last year.
- He has done a master’s degree in history from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi and a post-graduation in Public Administration from Birmingham University.
- In his administrative career of four decades, he has played important roles in various fields such as finance, taxation, industry and infrastructure.

- He played an important role in maintaining India’s financial stability during the Kovid-19 epidemic.
- Global Finance magazine included him among the top three central bankers for two consecutive years.
- He also received the ‘A+’ rating in 2024.
The tenure of CEO of NITI Aayog increased
The central government has also extended the tenure of NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subramaniam for one year till 24 February 2025. He was appointed to the post in February 2023.
The new appointment of Shaktikanta Das and extending the tenure of CEO of NITI Aayog is considered an administrative decisions.
