Legal screws on former MP and cricketer Shakib Al Hasan, political relations become troublesome
Bangladesh veteran cricketer and former MP Shakib Al Hasan’s difficulties are constantly increasing. A Bangladesh court has issued an order to confiscate his property. This action is said to be related to a check bounce case, but it is considered to be the result of his former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Awami League. Shakib, who has once been a Bangladesh cricket star as well as Awami League MP, has now come under the circle of legal and political controversies.
Why action against Shakib?
Shakib Al Hasan’s name came into the limelight during the 2024 student movements in Bangladesh. When the protests against the Sheikh Hasina government across the country intensified, these movements took violent form. On 5 August 2024, Sheikh Hasina had to resign as Prime Minister and leave the country, and she is currently living in exile in India.
After the collapse of his government, strict action began on the leaders and supporters associated with the Awami League. Shakib also came in this wrapped.
Charge of murder and check bounce dispute
Shakib’s name was recorded in FIR along with 147 others in the murder of a student during 2024 protests. Surprisingly, Shakib was not present in Bangladesh at that time and was playing a T20 league in Canada. Despite this, this allegation further increased his difficulties.
This was followed by a new controversy in January 2025, when Dhaka’s court issued an arrest warrant against him in the check bounce case. The IFIC Bank alleged that a check of about $ 300,000 was bounced by Shakib. Now, in the same case, the court has ordered to confiscate his property.
Causes of trouble covered with Awami League
It is believed that this action has been taken due to Shakib’s close ties with Sheikh Hasina and Awami League. Shakib won the 2024 election on the Awami League ticket and made it to the Parliament. But since the government fell, he has not returned to Bangladesh and is currently living in America. His absence and political loyalty is considered a major reason for taking legal steps against him.
Impact on cricket career
Shakib Al Hasan has been one of the most successful players of Bangladesh cricket. He represented the country in 71 Tests, 247 ODIs and 129 T20 matches and took a total of 712 wickets. But last year, his bowling action was questioned, and despite giving a test twice, he could not get a clean chit. For this reason, he did not get a place in the team for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Now this dispute of property seizure has made a serious impact on both his cricket and personal life.
Sheikh Hasina connection and punishment
Shakib has a deep political relationship with Sheikh Hasina. He was an active member of the Awami League and was part of the government. But after the fall of the Hasina government and change of power, the situation changed for them completely.
The present interim government, headed by Nobel winner Mohammad Yunus, has taken a tough stand on the people associated with the Awami League. Shakib’s property seizure is considered part of this policy, which is being seen as his political loyalty.
What next?
Shakib is currently in the US and seems less likely to return to Bangladesh. His property confiscation may affect his economic condition and has also increased uncertainty on cricket career.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board had earlier appealed to him to return to the country by giving him security, but till now he is not ready to return to the country. Now it will be interesting to see what steps Shakib take to face this legal battle and will he be able to return to international cricket.
