The severity of winter is increasing rapidly in North India. Cold has tightened its grip due to rain and snowfall in the mountains in many states including the national capital Delhi. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold wave warning in many states including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab. Cold and fog outbreak in Delhi

The effect of cold is clearly being felt in Delhi and NCR. Dense fog and drop in temperature have increased the cold even more. On Monday, Delhi’s minimum temperature was recorded at 10.3 degrees Celsius, which is 3.5 degrees above normal. But according to IMD, this temperature may further fall to a minimum of 6 degrees Celsius in the coming days. The maximum temperature is also likely to be around 18 degrees Celsius.

The fog is so dense that visibility is extremely low in the morning and late night. The risk of accidents has increased especially while driving due to fog.

Orange Alert: Cold and rain crisis

IMD has issued orange alert for Delhi and surrounding areas. This alert has been issued in view of the possibility of cold winds, rain and hailstorm. Along with this, heavy snowfall in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir has made the weather more challenging. The effect of increasing cold in the plains is clearly visible from these areas.

Effect of fog and cold in North India

Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan:

Dense to very dense fog is likely over these areas during December 29 and 30. Especially in Punjab and Haryana, the fog is so dense that vehicular movement is being affected in the morning and evening. A drop of 8 degrees Celsius has been recorded in the temperature in Mount Abu, Rajasthan.

Uttar Pradesh:

There is a possibility of rain with thunder in many districts of Uttar Pradesh. IMD has also issued an alert of strong winds and lightning. Many areas including Banaras are wrapped in a blanket of dense fog, due to which the feeling of cold has increased further.

Snowfall on the mountains and its effects

Heavy snowfall continues in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Kashmir. While snowfall has boosted tourism, it has also created problems for local residents. In these areas, traffic is being disrupted due to accumulation of snow on the roads. A drop in temperature is being recorded in the plains due to cold winds.

  • Maximum temperature: 17-18 degrees Celsius

North India:
