Kolkata: Judge Anirban Das of Sealdah session court on Monday gave lifetime imprisonment till death to RG Kar hospital rape and murder guilty Sanjoy Roy.
Despite CBI lawyer’s prayer for capital punishment to Roy, judge das stated that the case is not ‘rarest of the rare’ case for which he had given lifetime imprisonment to Roy and had imposed a fine of Rs. 50000.
The court had also ordered the state government to give a compensation of Rs. 17 lakhs to the victim’s parents as the incident took place at a government hospital.
“Since the victim died while on duty in the hospital, her place of work, it is the responsibility of the state to pay compensation to the family of the doctor, Rs 10 lakh for the death and Rs 7 lakh for the rape,” said judge Anirban Das.
Notably, before the sentencing of the punishment, the guilty of RG Kar rape and murder Roy constantly said that he was being ‘framed’.
Roy even alleged that he was beaten up in the prison.
Present in the courtroom, the victim’s parents refused compensation and demanded ‘Justice’ for their daughter.
Later, coming out of the courtroom, the victim’s mother said that her loss had no compensation.
“I have lost my daughter and nothing can compensate for it. God has given me a diamond and I have lost it forever. I am not happy with the verdict. I have realised one thing that not talent, a daughter’s parents should have power to protect her. Several questions are surrounding me, I don’t know whether I will get the answers,” said the victim’s mother.
The victim’s father blamed CBI for failing to establish that this case is ‘rarest of the rare’.
The judgement of the court mentioned that the ‘rarest of the rare’ case is decided on the proof submitted before the court and not the public sentiments.
The judgement also mentioned that there is ‘no habitual offender’ case against Roy.
The protesting doctors also expressed their disappointment over the judgement.
A protesting doctor Asfaqullah mentioned moving to higher court against the judgement.
“The judgement is unacceptable. We all know that the institutional crime that took place is not done by one person. There was more than one person involved in the crime. We want severe punishment for all of them,” said Asfaqullah.
The protesting doctors under the platform of ‘Abhaya Manch’ also took out a protest rally.
Senior doctor Biplab Chandra said that the protests over the incident will continue till ‘justice’ is met.
“If this is not a rarest of the rare case then we have nothing to say. We are shaken,” said Chandra.
