On January 1, 2025, after starting the day on a positive note and trading with some momentum throughout the day, the markets have closed for the day’s trade in the green. The Indian indices closed the first day of the new year on a positive note.

As the day came to an end, the BSE Sensex jumped with marginal gains of 368.40 points, or 0.47 per cent, ending the day at 78,507.41. Similarly, the NSE Nifty rose in value by 98.10 points or 0.41 per cent, to close at 23,742.90.

Additionally, the Nifty Bank also closed in green. The index closed at 51,060.60, increasing by 200.40 or 0.39 per cent.

Major Gainers and Losers

Gainers: On the BSE tranche, at the time of writing, major gainers included Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra & Mahindra gained over 2 per cent. In addition, L&T and Bajaj Finance made gains of over 1.5 per cent. Hercules in small-cap companies gained a mammoth 20 per cent.

Losers: Adani Ports, Tata Steel, Zomato and HCL Tech were the top losers at the bourse.

Markets In The Morning

The Indian markets opened flat on Wednesday morning with Sensex at 78,235.89, increasing in value by 96.88 points or 0.12 per cent. At the NSE end, the Nifty at 23,663.25 was also up by 18.45 points or 0.08 per cent.

Nifty Bank in the morning session was trading slightly high at 50,941.60 also up by 81.40 points or 0.16 per cent.

Japan's Nikkei closed on December 30 with a decline of 0.96 per cent or 386.62 points, taking the overall value to 39,894.54.

Asian Markets

Major Asian indices were closed for trading on January 1 on account of new year. However, Japan’s Nikkei closed on December 30 with a decline of 0.96 per cent or 386.62 points, taking the overall value to 39,894.54.

Another Tokyo-based index, TOPIX was also shut, and it closed on December 30 with a loss of 0.60 per cent to slump to 2,784.92. As we move to China, the Hang Seng also closed on December 31 with a minor rise of 0.092 per cent to jump to 20,059.95 points.

On December 31 itself, on December 31, the SSE composite dropped in value by 1.63 per cent, to slump to 3,351.76. The value of South Korea’s KOSPI also declined. On December 30, the index dropped 0.22 percent to crawl at 2,399.49.
