Search for Ukraine-Russia Peace: US Vice President JD Vance on Sunday (local time) met Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelancesi in Rome on the occasion of the opening ceremony of Pop Lio XIV at St. Peters Square in Vatican City.
According to a statement by the Vice President’s Office, the focus of the meeting was on the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which discussed their shared objectives of preventing bloodshed in Ukraine.
The United States Foreign Minister Marco Rubio was also present at the meeting.
The two sides also discussed the current status of talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul, Turkey, aims to achieve ceasefire and establish permanent peace in the region.
The statement issued by the Vice President’s Office said, “This afternoon, Vice President JD Vance and External Affairs Minister Marco Rubio met Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelanski. The leaders discussed their shared goals of ending bloodshed in Ukraine and gave update on the current state of talks and permanent peace.”
The three were involved in the two -hour prayers held in Vatican on Sunday, as well as Peru’s President Dina Boluart; This is the country where the Pope Leo worked as a missionary and bishop for several decades.
The talks held in Istanbul were the first face-to-face meeting of the two countries after a three-year tough military confrontation.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and welcomed the prisoner exchange agreement during the Russia-Ukraine talks.
During his conversation on Saturday, Rubio reiterated Trump’s message, saying, “Death and destruction must stop.”
According to the US State Department, Secretary Rubio welcomed the agreement on the exchange of prisoners during the Ukraine-Russia talks on 16 May and gave this strong message to President Trump: “The United States is committed to the permanent end of the Russian Russia-Ukraine war.”
The statement said, “The best way to move forward the comprehensive peace plan proposed by the United States. The Foreign Minister emphasized President Trump’s call to end the immediate ceasefire and violence.”
Earlier, US President Donald Trump had said that he would talk on different phones with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian counterpart Volodimir Zelansky with the aim of preventing “bloodshed”.
Trump wrote on ‘Truth Social’, “I will talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the telephone at 10 am on Monday. It will be the subject of conversation to stop ‘bloodshed’, in which more than 5,000 Russian and Ukrainian soldiers are being killed per week, and business…”
He said, “After this I will talk to various members of Ukraine’s President Zelanski and NATO. It is expected that it will be a meaningful day, a ceasefire and it will be a very violent war, which should never have been, will end. God, do good to all of us !!!”
