Ahmedabad: Two -wheelers are dominating the streets of India once again. The speed of scooters, especially, has also increased. Scooters, which were an important part of every household until a few years ago, are now making a great comeback with new technology and modern design.

Scooter sales rose 16.6 per cent to about 6.3 lakh units from April to February, the first 11 months of FY 2024-25 and is close to crossing the previous record level. In contrast, the motorcycle market has seen a relatively slow growth. Sales increased only 5 percent to 11.2 million units.

Now, the increasing impact of urbanization, the demand for convenient transport and the popularity of electric scooters have brought the scooter market to new heights. Scooter sales are on the verge of breaking old records due to modern technology, rising fuel prices and government’s EV policies.

The demand for scooters in India is increasing rapidly and it is growing three times faster than motorcycles.

According to experts, there are many reasons behind this boom in scooters, including new launch, increased discounts and increasing demand for electric vehicles. Sale of scooters can reach 7 million units by 2025. In the last two years, the total motorcycle market share has come down from 63.1 percent to 60.7 percent.

The demand for electric scooters is increasing rapidly. A total of 1.15 lakh electric two -wheelers were sold in 2024, which is 6.3% of the total two -wheeler market. People are buying more electric scooters due to subsidy up to Rs 10,000 under the government’s ‘PM e-drive’ scheme.
