Although the shox gene is present in both men and women, its effects vary. This is because the shox gene is more active on the Y chromosome, which increases the length of men.
This study also included those who had an additional X or Y chromosome in the body. These are very rare conditions. In such cases, it was observed that the additional Y chromosome further increased the length of the people, while the additional X chromosome did not have such an effect. This made it clear that the Shox gene present in the Y chromosome has a greater impact on the height. Scientists say that this special version of SHOX gene is a little less active in women, due to which they do not get full benefit. This gene works more in men and is about 25% more length in men. The remaining difference is caused by sex hormones and other genetic factors such as testosterone.
