School Holiday: Schools and colleges have been closed in many states following warnings of heavy rain. Due to the incessant rains in the country, life has become chaotic and schools and colleges have been closed at many places.
A holiday has been declared for schools and colleges in Karnataka’s Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts on Thursday due to the orange alert issued by the meteorologists. District officials said the order would be applicable to all anganwadi centres, primary and high schools, graduate colleges, government-aided and private schools.
The authorities have asked parents to be careful about their children and not allow them to go to low-lying areas, rivers, lakes, beaches and places where water is high.
Similarly, the Goa government has decided to close schools from classes 1 to 12 on Thursday in view of the rain warning issued by the IMD. The IMD had issued an orange alert for Goa, which means moderate to heavy rain is expected in the state, while also predicting possible flooding in the coastal state.
In a circular issued on Wednesday, Goa’s Director of Education Shailesh Sinai Zhingade confirmed that though schools in the coastal states would remain closed, any scheduled exams would still be conducted.
The Kerala government has also announced the closure of schools, colleges and universities in Kasaragod, Palakkad, Thrissur and Kottayam districts of the state. However, the Civil Services Examinations will be conducted as per the schedule.
IMD has issued Orange Alert for six districts of Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod today. Earlier on Wednesday, heavy rains uprooted huge trees, damaged houses and vehicles, snapped power lines and disrupted traffic for hours in several parts of the state.
