Saraswati puja 2025: This year there is confusion about the date of Saraswati Puja (Basant Panchami). According to some almanacs, it should be celebrated on 2 February 2025, while most scholars and major almanacs are considering it on 3 February 2025.

This confusion has confused the common people whether Saraswati Puja should be done on February 2 or on 3 February? Let us understand this dispute on the basis of scriptures and almanacs.

Why is there confusion about the date of Saraswati Puja?

Saraswati Puja is determined on the basis of lunar calendar (almanac). Basant Panchami and Goddess Saraswati are worshiped on Magh Shukla Panchami Tithi in Panchang.

This year Panchami Tithi is falling in two days:
On February 2, Panchami Tithi starts from 9:15 am and will remain till 6:53 am on 3 February.
According to other almanacs, Panchami Tithi will begin on February 2 at 12:45 pm and will end on February 3 at 11:48 am.

For this reason, some people are talking about worship on 2 February, while others believe that this will be the right day due to the Udaya Tithi on 3 February.

What are the major almanac and scholars saying?

Why is worshiping Saraswati more auspicious on 3 February?

  • According to Rishikesh Panchang, Vaidehi Panchang and Darbhanga Sanskrit University Panchang, Panchami Tithi will start on February 2 at 12:45 pm and end on February 3 at 11:48 pm.
  • According to the scriptures, the decision of any festival and worship is taken on the basis of ‘Udaya Tithi’ (which is the date at sunrise).
  • Accordingly, worshiping Saraswati on 3 February will be scriptural.

This is the reason that the last royal bath of the Kumbh Mela has also been kept on 3 February, which further enhances the importance of this day.

Can worship be done on 2 February too?

  • According to Panchang Diwakar and some other almanacs, Panchami Tithi starts on February 2 at 9:15 am and will end at 6:53 am on 3 February.
  • Therefore, some people are suggesting worship on 2 February as well.

However, according to most scholars and almanacs, it would be more appropriate to worship on 3 February on the basis of Udaya Tithi.

Auspicious time for Saraswati Puja 2025

date Saraswati Puja Muhurta Panchami Tithi Time
2 February From 9:15 am February 2 from 9:15 am to 3 February from 6:53 am
3 February 7:00 am to 12:00 pm February 2, 12:45 pm to 3 February from 11:48 am

According to most scholars and almanacs, worshiping on 3 February will be auspicious, but it can be allowed to worship on 2 February as well.

The importance of Saraswati Puja is connecting with Kumbh Mela

This time Saraswati Puja is also special on 3 February because on this day there will be a third and last royal bath in the Kumbh Mela of Prayagraj.

  • The third royal bath in the Kumbh Mela is very important, and when it falls on the day of Basant Panchami, its importance increases further.
  • Millions of devotees will bathe in the Ganges on this day and earn virtue.

If you are in Prayagraj Kumbh, you can take a bath in Sangam on 3 February and do Saraswati Puja, which will give you double benefit.
