In the harsh winter of Poh in the year 1704, Mata Gujri Ji had to spend two difficult nights in the cold tower along with her grandsons, Sahibzade Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh. The courage and patience he showed in these difficult circumstances is a source of inspiration for the Sangat even today. To experience this hardship and remember their sacrifice, the Sangat during the Shaheedi Pakhwada specially leave the quilt, bed or cot and sleep on straw spread on the ground. During this time people sleep in less clothes and live a simple life.
During the Shahidi Pakhwada, the Sangat stops making sweets or doing any kind of auspicious work in the houses. This is the time to understand and pay tribute to the importance of sacrifice and simplicity.
Safar-e-Shahadat and Nagar Kirtan
Many Nagar Kirtans are organized during Safar-e-Shahadat. There are three major yatras, which connect the historical sites of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Mata Gujri Ji, and Sahibzadas. One of these journeys is from Chamkaur Sahib to Jhar Sahib.
This journey especially remembers the route where Guru Sahib’s family got separated. The procession, which starts at 4 am in the morning, is about a kilometer long and is attended by a large number of Sangat. Devotees undertake this journey barefoot, which reflects their faith in their dedication and sacrifice.
This loyal contribution of the Sangat revives that glorious saga of sacrifice, tenacity and courage, which holds a place of respect and inspiration in the heart of every Sikh.
