The discussion of a possible peace agreement to end the long -running war between Russia and Ukraine is in full swing. According to CNN report, the United States is considering accepting Russia’s control over Crimea as part of this agreement. This information has been given by an officer familiar with the proposed outline.
The peace proposal suggests an immediate ceasefire between the two countries. The outline was shared with Ukrainian and European officials in Paris.
Talks between American and Russian Foreign Ministers
CNN said that there has been a telephone conversation between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavarov regarding this proposal. However, some important aspects are yet to be agreed. The US is planning to further refine the proposal with Ukraine and European representatives in London next week.
Significantly, in 2014, Russia captured Crimea through military action, which was declared illegal by the international community. Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelansky has repeatedly denied any concession on Crimea.
Trump warns to leave peace talks
Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump said that if any party makes the conversation highly complicated, the US can retreat from this process. He said, “If any of the two sides make it very difficult, then we will say this – you are fools – and will leave it.”
However, Trump also said that he expects success of the peace agreement. Describing it as an important turn, he said, “I think we have a good chance to fulfill it. It is still reaching its peak.”
Rubio expressed a decision soon
After high -level talks with European, Russian and Ukrainian authorities in Paris, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also stressed on early decisions. He told reporters, “We have to take a very quick decision – within a few days – whether this solution is possible or not.”
America’s efforts are not getting support: Trump
Talking to reporters at the White House, Trump said that peace talks have now reached an important level, but none of Russia and Ukraine are actively supporting America’s efforts. He also made it clear that he does not think that Russian President Vladimir Putin is deliberately delaying the conversation.
