Royal family controversy : In Rajasthan, the descendants of Maharana Pratap and the prince of the royal family of Mewar are once again in the news. This time the dispute of Mewar royal family came to the streets. Vishvaraj Singh reached Udaipur’s City Palace to follow the Mewar coronation tradition, however, the door was closed. However, the entire incident became controversial and the dispute reached the level of stone pelting and vandalism.

Why the ruckus in Udaipur City Palace?

Coronation in Chittorgarh: Former MP Mahendra Singh Mewar died on 10 November. On this, BJP MLA from Nathdwara and his son Vishvaraj Singh Mewar were coronated as the 77th successor of Mahendra Singh Mewar in Chittorgarh on the morning of 25 November 2024.

No entry into Udaipur City Palace: After the coronation, Vishvaraj Singh reached Udaipur City Palace to visit Dhoni’s mother as per the tradition of Mewar royal family. City Palace is owned by Vishwa Singh Mewar’s uncle Arvind Singh Mewar and his son Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar. Arvind Singh Mewar closed the doors of the City Palace and did not allow Vishwa Singh Mewar to enter.

The controversy started from 1955

  • The reason behind the uproar that took place in Udaipur City Palace on 25 November 2024 is the property dispute with the Mewar royal family, which started in the year 1955 and is continuing till now. This means that the grandfather’s fight has now reached the grandchildren.
  • Actually, in the year 1955, Bhagwant Singh became the Maharana of Mewar. He had two sons, Mahendra Singh and Arvind Singh. After becoming Maharana, Bhagwant Singh started selling or renting out his ancestral properties in Mewar.
  • Bhagwant Singh’s eldest son Mahendra Singh did not like the idea of selling or leasing out the ancestral property, so he opposed it and demanded distribution of the ancestral property under Hindu succession law.
  • A case was also registered against his father. After this, in his will on 15 May 1984, Bhagwant Singh made his younger son Arvind Singh the executor of his properties. Also, Mahendra Singh was evicted from the trust and property.
  • Bhagwant Singh died on 3 November 1984. There was a property dispute going on since 1984 between the families of Bhagwant Singh’s son Mahendra Singh and Arvind Singh. Now the same dispute is between Mahendra Singh’s son Vishwaraj Singh and Arvind Singh’s son.

What is the tradition of Dhuni Darshan?
There is a tradition about the Sisodia dynasty of Mewar that whenever a new Maharana is crowned, Dhuni Mata is given darshan in the City Palace of Udaipur. After this, Maharana also has to visit Ekling Ji temple. After the coronation ceremony in Chittorgarh, Vishvaraj Singh of Mewar also reached Mewar City Palace for Dhuni Darshan and Ekling Temple, but he was stopped from entering the City Palace.

Coronation program declared illegal
Amidst the property dispute of the Mewar royal family, the family of Arvind Singh Mewar has also issued a public notice against coming to Udaipur’s City Palace for darshan of Eklingnath temple and Dhuni Mata after the coronation (dastur) program of Vishwa Singh Mewar.

The trust is run by the father

According to media reports, Arvind Singh Mewar and his son Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar had declared the Dastur program of Vishvaraj Singh Mewar illegal. Arvind Singh Mewar even said that ‘the royal family of Mewar is run by a trust, the management of which was given to him by his father. In such a situation, the right to the throne belongs to me and my son (Lakshyaraj Singh).
