The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) failing to get a flyover constructed at Turbhe and the series of fatal accidents of pedestrians while crossing the busy Thane-Belapur road has prompted residents to undertake a mass signature campaign. The six year old demand took a momentum after three deaths were reported in last 15 days while crossing the road.
“There is a flyover proposed on Thane Belapur road which has been pending over many years now. If that was done, people could at least cross the road from under the flyover while the vehicles passes over the flyover. Since flyover work is pending, NMMC should at least consider building a sub or a foot over bridge for the pedestrians to help cross the road,” Santosh Jadhav, one of the residents who has been on forefront in demanding the bridge at the spot, said. Jadhav is a member of Turbhe Store sangharsh committee that has been fighting for the cause.

The residents had held a signature campaign on account of the Constitution Day and had received over 1000 signs. “The contract for construction of the flyover is going to expire in January 2026 and till date other than digging there has been no development in the work. This has only further worsened the traffic issue posing major risk for pedestrians,” Jadhav added.
NMMC is to construct a 560 meter four – lane flyover near the Turbhe railway station. The 32 crore project was renewed 10 months back however residents claim no work has been done. “In the last ten years over 20 odd persons have died and numerous have been injured while trying to cross the road to the station. When will NMMC realise the seriousness of the issue, I hope the mass signature brings the desired change,” said a resident.
A police attached with the traffic department affirmed the issue and stated that the work of the flyover is pending due to technical issues. “ There are some changes in the design of the structure and that has delayed the project,” said the officer.
