Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Sale of Republic Day decorative items like small Tricolour flags, brooches, wristbands, table flags and buntings, have witnessed a significant decline, which is about 60% this year in the city, according to vendors in New Market and 10 Number Market.
Kiosk and street vendors, once a vibrant feature of these markets during the patriotic season, are now struggling to make ends meet. Many attribute this downturn to the increasing digitalisation of patriotism. Items that were once purchased enthusiastically by people to publicly display their love for the nation are now being replaced by digital alternatives.
Lalita Bai, a street vendor in New Market who has been in the seasonal business for over 30 years, said, “A decade ago, I would set up my Republic Day stall immediately after Makar Sankranti and easily earn Rs 2,000 a day.
Now, I only start four days before 26th and earn maximum of Rs 1,000 a day,” she said. According to an older watch shop owner in New Market, the number of kiosks selling Republic Day items has drastically reduced. “Years ago, the market was bustling with these vendors, but now, even a day before Republic Day, only 10 to 15 stalls are visible,” he said.
Physical goods vanish
The decline in demand for physical goods extends beyond decorations. The owner of Nema Card Zone, one of the city’s oldest invitation card sellers, said once-thriving market for Republic Day greeting cards has nearly vanished. “Fifteen years ago, greeting cards were in high demand, but now people prefer digital cards on their phones,” he said.
