Mumbai: Noted sculptor Ram Sutar has been chosen for Maharashtra Bhushan, the state government’s highest civilian award, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed the legislative assembly on Thursday.
Sutar, a Padma Bhushan awardee, is best known for designing the Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue, depicting Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Gujarat, standing at 182 meters.
Expressing his delight over the selection, Fadnavis said, “He is a centenarian but is still working on the Ambedkar statue at the Indu mill memorial project in Mumbai.
The award comprises Rs 25 lakh and a memento.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar also lauded the sculptor, stating that his recognition is a tribute from the 13 crore people of Maharashtra. Pawar emphasised that this honor is not just a personal achievement for Sutar but a celebration of Maharashtra’s rich artistic and cultural heritage.
Extending his best wishes for Sutar’s health and long life, Pawar called him a shining beacon of Maharashtra’s art scene, inspiring generations of artists.
Deputy CM Eknath Shinde also paid tribute to Ram Sutar, calling him India’s most senior and revered sculptor. He remarked that the prestige of the Maharashtra Bhushan Award has been elevated by honoring a legendary figure like Sutar.
Shinde described Sutar as the Bhishmacharya of the sculpting world, who has dedicated his entire life to art and creativity. He highlighted Sutar’s immense contribution to Indian culture, particularly through his monumental sculptures that have gained global recognition.
