Darshanam Mogilaiah, a celebrated folk artist and master of the ancient Kinnera instrument, passed away on the morning of December 19, 2024. He died at the age of 73 in a hospital in Warangal after battling a severe kidney ailment.
Who was Darshanam Mogilaiah?
Born in 1951 in Telangana, Mogilaiah came from a family of Kinnera players, an instrument with roots tracing back to the 4th century CE. Fondly known as “Kinnera Mogulaiah,” he was one of the last remaining masters of this unique string instrument. Mogilaiah gained national fame for his remarkable innovation of a 12-stair Kinnera, a modification that made him stand out from other musicians and preserved the heritage of Telangana’s folk music.
National recognition
Mogilaiah’s work received widespread attention after his performance in the acclaimed Tollywood film Balagam. In the movie, he not only acted but also sang the soul-stirring song Thoduga Maa Thodundi, which became a favorite among fans of folk music. His contributions to the art form were recognised in 2022 when he was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honors, for his dedication to preserving traditional music.
Health scares did not stop Mogilaiah form inspiring others
In recent years, Mogilaiah faced several health issues, including the kidney ailment that sadly led to his death. Despite his struggles, he continued to perform and inspire a younger generation of musicians. His resilience and love for the Kinnera kept him active in the cultural scene even during his final years.
Mogilaiah’s death marks the end of an era for traditional music in India. However, his legacy will live on through his son, Mahender, who has been learning to play the Kinnera.
