California is reeling from one of the most devastating wildfires in its history. Flames have destroyed hundreds of acres and left a trail of destruction in their path. Videos across the state show heart-wrenching scenes as homes, businesses, and natural landscapes succumb to the fire disaster. Even the glamorous spots of Malibu, home to celebrities like Paris Hilton and Mandy Moore, have not been spared.
Several of Malibu’s most beloved eateries—icons that have served as landmarks and community hubs for decades—have been lost. The destruction has left owners, staff, and customers grieving as they come to terms with the loss of these cherished establishments.
Reel Inn
Reel Inn, a popular seafood shack situated at the base of Topanga Canyon Boulevard on the Pacific Coast Highway, has been destroyed to ashes. Since its opening in 1986, it has been a favourite destination for locals and visitors, renowned for its casual vibe and fresh seafood. In a heartfelt Instagram post, the restaurant confirmed its destruction and expressed gratitude for the support it has received over the years.
“We are so grateful for the 36 years we’ve been a part of the community,” the post read. “Grateful to all of our customers. We are heartbroken and unsure what will be left. Hopefully, the state parks will let us rebuild when the dust settles.”
Cholada Thai
Next door to Reel Inn, Cholada Thai—a seaside restaurant cherished for its authentic Thai cuisine and oceanfront views—was also crushed. Operating since 1999, it has become a beloved spot for both locals and tourists.
Its sister restaurant in Long Beach announced the tragic news on Instagram. The brand stated, “We are heartbroken to announce that our first Cholada location on the Pacific Coast has been lost after serving since 1999 due to the Palisades wildfire. We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has tagged us and shown their support during this difficult time.”
Moonshadows
Moonshadows, another iconic Malibu restaurant known for its oceanfront dining and mouthwatering delicacies, has also been destroyed. As reported by THR, the restaurant gained fame in 2006 during an incident involving actor Mel Gibson, but it was far more celebrated for its culinary offerings and breathtaking views.
On Instagram, the owners confirmed the loss, saying, “Thank you for all of the prayers and wishes. Stay safe and strong, everyone.”
Rosenthal Winery
Malibu’s Rosenthal Winery tasting room, a Pacific Coast Highway institution, was also claimed by the wildfire. In a message to their followers, the winery confirmed that while their tasting room was destroyed, their staff remained safe. “We will stay strong and keep everyone informed of our next move,” the post assured.
Side Pie
Side Pie, a local pizza shop, shared images on Instagram showing the complete destruction of their building, another heartbreaking reminder of the wildfire’s indiscriminate path.
