UPCL, adopting innovative power purchase strategy, has obtained cheap power from the short term market at a record 22 percent lower rate in the financial year 2023-24 as compared to the financial year 2022-23. The average short term power purchase of UPCL was Rs 6.86 per unit in the financial year 2022-23, which has decreased by 22 percent to Rs 5.35 per unit in the financial year 2023-24.
UPCL Managing Director .l Kumar said on Monday that the electricity tariff of consumers has been reduced by getting cheaper electricity from the market. As a result, smooth electricity supply at low rates has become possible across the state. Due to the decrease in the average short term power purchase price, the overall power purchase rate has also decreased by 2.92 percent from Rs 5.48 per unit in the financial year 2022-23 to Rs 5.32 per unit in the financial year 2023-24. Due to better power purchase management, UPCL has reduced a total of Rs 324 crore under FPPCA item in the electricity bills of consumers i.e. Rs 39.06 crore (Rs 0.30 per unit) in July 2024, Rs 67.10 crore (Rs 0.52 per unit) in August 2024, Rs 28.88 crore (Rs 0.52 per unit) in September 2024. Rs 0.23 per unit), Rs 84.19 crore in October 2024 (Rs 0.70 per unit) and a discount of up to Rs 104.49 crore (Rs 0.88 per unit) has also been given in November 2024. The amount of such savings in electricity purchase cost is being given by UPCL to the consumers on monthly basis in the form of discount in electricity bills, which ranges from a minimum of 26 paise to a maximum of 101 paise per unit category wise.
