Mumbai: The recruitment process for 4,435 vacant assistant professor positions in unaided grant-in-aid colleges across Maharashtra is set to gain momentum soon.
The proposal for filling these vacancies has been sent to the finance department, and after addressing the concerns raised, the recruitment will proceed without delay, Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil informed the Legislative Council on Wednesday in response to a calling attention motion.
Former Governor Ramesh Bais had earlier imposed a temporary halt on the recruitment process, suggesting modifications to ensure greater transparency in higher education appointments.
“Now that the Governor (C. P. Radhakrishnan) has lifted the stay, the recruitment process will be conducted in a fair and transparent manner,” Patil assured the House.
With the implementation of revised undergraduate and postgraduate courses under the new National Education Policy, there will be changes in workload distribution. Patil further stated that out of the total approved teaching and equivalent positions across non-agricultural universities and government-recognised deemed universities in the state, 659 positions—constituting 80% of the sanctioned strength—will be advertised for recruitment.
Additionally, the authority to issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the appointment of principals, which previously rested with the General Administration Department, will now be reinstated to deputy directors, as was the earlier practice, Patil informed.
The calling attention motion regarding the urgent need to fill vacant teaching positions was moved by Legislative Council member Jayant Asgavkar, with members Satyajit Tambe, Vikram Kale, and Abhijit Wanjarri also participating in the discussion.
