Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Dr TN Dubey, a noted neurologist and former vice-chancellor of Madhya Pradesh Ayurvigyan Vishwavidyalaya (Medical Science University), Jabalpur, has advised people to be cautious during winter months, as they may be at increased risk of stroke. He emphasized the importance of timely medical attention, urging patients to seek medical help within the “golden period” of 2-3 hours, instead of wasting time with unqualified practitioners.Dr.
Dubey also said that unregulated consumption of protein, combined with over-exercise, could lead to clotting in the brain. In an exclusive conversation with Free Press, Dr. Dubey shared his insights on various neurological issues.
Excerpts from the interview:
What are the main neurological problems people face in winter?
During winter, constriction of blood vessels leads to two main health problems – heart and brain conditions. The most prominent neurological issue is stroke. It is crucial that people don’t waste the first 2-3 hours, which is called the golden period. They should immediately consult a doctor instead of turning to quacks, as delay can result in long-term paralysis.
How can people identify early symptoms of stroke?
The symptoms of stroke include face drooping, arm weakness, and speech difficulty. A simple way to remember these symptoms is by using the acronym FAST: Face, Arms, Speech, and Time to call a doctor. People should also recognize sudden issues with walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination. A sudden severe headache with no known cause is also a warning sign.
How is stroke treated?
The most common treatment involves administration of an IV injection within the first three hours of a stroke. Thrombolytic therapy, which involves injecting a thrombolytic drug, is used to restore blood flow to the brain. The cost of this treatment is approximately Rs 30,000 to Rs 35,000 and can be life-saving. However, it is not suitable for brain haemorrhages. A CT scan is conducted to distinguish between a stroke and brain haemorrhage.
What about the treatment for epilepsy?
There are several misconceptions about epilepsy treatment, such as using strong odours to stop seizures. Common myths include applying “shoe-smell” or sniffing an onion or metal during an epileptic attack. These practices are not effective. People should always consult a qualified doctor for proper treatment.
How can migraines be managed?
Migraines are severe headaches that cause throbbing, pulsating pain, often lasting for hours or even days. These headaches worsen with physical activity or exposure to bright lights. Proper diagnosis and treatment are essential for managing migraines.
What other neurological problems are linked to modern lifestyles?
One of the common issues today is the uncontrolled consumption of protein, which can lead to clotting. Moreover, prolonged sitting, especially in chairs, is causing neurological problems. For instance, extended computer use can lead to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, a condition caused by pressure on the median nerve in the wrist.
