It is noteworthy that RBI had earlier announced to withdraw Rs 2000 notes from circulation from May 19, 2023. These Rs 2000 notes were allowed to be deposited or exchanged in all bank branches till October 7, 2023. Apart from this, on October 9, 2023, the public was also given the facility to deposit Rs 2000 notes in their bank accounts in the offices issued by RBI. At the same time, those sending currency notes of Rs 2000 through Indian Post from any post office in the country were also given the facility to send them to the RBI issuing offices for deposit in their bank accounts.

Regarding how many notes of Rs 2000 have been returned over time, in the data released by the Reserve Bank of India, it has been announced that till December 31, 2024, 98.12 percent of the notes have been returned. Till May 19, 2023, a total of Rs 2000 notes worth Rs 3.56 lakh crore were in circulation, which has reduced to only Rs 6691 crore. Rs 2000 notes are still legal tender.
