Navi Mumbai: A head constable with the Government Railway Police (GRP) was killed by two unidentified men who allegedly strangled and pushed him in front of a moving train in Navi Mumbai early on Wednesday, the police said.

According to the GRP, the incident was witnessed by the motorman of the approaching local who told the police that there were two accused.

The deceased person was identified as Vijay Ramesh Chavan, 42, and was posted with Panvel GRP while the incident happened under the jurisdiction of Vashi GRP.

“We have got the information that the deceased was under the influence of alcohol and was off duty. It is a matter of investigation to find if he was forcefully made to drink or something happened while he was partying for New Year,” a police officer from Vashi GRP said.

“The deceased had ligature marks, indicating strangulation, and sustained head injuries. The team is investigating the case and are trying to trace the accused at the earliest. There were no cctv in the area and hence we have not found any footage,” Deputy Commissioner of police (GRP) Manoj Patil said.

The incident happened between Rabale and Ghansoli railway stations between 5.25 am and 5.32 am. Chavan, who was posted with Panvel GRP, was a native of Jalgaon district and was a resident of Ghansoli.

“There was a pathway towards the railway tracks near Rabale railway station and the accused men had brought the deceased through that way and then threw him before a running train,” DCP Patil added.

The Vashi GRP has registered a murder case against the two unknown people and formed multiple teams to trace the killers
