Navi Mumbai: The Raigad District Collector has ordered a temporary ban on heavy vehicles on the Mumbai-Goa Highway (NH-66) from afternoon 12 pm to midnight on Sunday to ease congestion as holiday travellers return from Konkan.
The decision follows a request from the Superintendent of Police, Raigad-Alibaug, citing a large influx of travellers returning after Holi and Dhulivandan, as well as weekend tourists visiting Alibaug, Murud, Shrivardhan, and Mahad.
“A heavy traffic is anticipated and a high risk of accidents is a possibility, hence traffic control measures was initiated,” Raigad SP Somnath Gharge said. The request was sent by Raigad police to Raigad Collector Kishan Jawale who issued an order on Saturday.
The ban applies to NH-66 from Kasheedi (Poladpur) to Khapoli (Pen) and NH-584A from Khopoli-Pali Phata to Wakan, covering both Mumbai-bound and Goa-bound directions.
However, essential service vehicles transporting milk, diesel, LPG, medicines, oxygen, and vegetables, along with police, fire brigade, and ambulances, are exempted from the restrictions.
