Chandigarh: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday met with the family of Navy officer Lt Vinay Narwal, who was killed in the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and condoled his death.

It may be recalled that Lt Narwal was among 26 people who were shot dead in a terror attack in Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on April 22, last.

Haryana incharge B K Hariprasad, state president Udai Bhan and Rohtak MP Deepender Hooda and few other party leaders accompanied Gandhi who reached Karnal in the afternoon. He spent around one and half hours with the family and departed at around 2.15 pm.

Gandhi, who did not interact with the newspersons, took to X  and said: “I met the bereaved family of Lt Vinay Narwal ji who was martyred in the Pahalgam attack and shared their grief and consoled them’’. He said “the whole country stands with the family of the martyrs’’ and reiterated that the opposition is firmly aligned with the government on the matter of national security. He demanded justice for the terror attack victims of the terror attack and said, “today the entire nation, along with the victim families, is waiting for justice’’.

On Sunday, Haryana chief minister’s wife Suman Saini, had paid respects to the late Navy officer at the “shradhanjali sabha’’ organised by his family members at their residence in Karnal. Earlier, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced a compensation of Rs 50 lakh and a government job to the family of Lt Narwal.

Lt Narwal, a native of Karnal was given an emotional farewell by family members last month. Lt Vinay Narwal, 26, who was posted at Kochi, had recently tied the knot with his wedding reception party held on April 16 after which he had travelled to Jammu and Kashmir with his wife.
