A 47-year-old rag-picker woman died after being hit by a JCB while picking garbage at the CP Talaw dumping transfer station in Thane, within the jurisdiction of the Srinagar Police Station in Thane, on Monday evening. The deceased has been identified as Jayshree Balu Jadhav, 47, a resident of Bhim Nagar in Wagale Estates.
The police said that the driver of the JCB fled the scene.The police said that the rag picker woman was collecting garbage at the garbage station while the JCB was working on the side; the bucket of the JCB accidentally hit her and collapsed onto the floor.
Following this, locals and bystanders rushed to the spot and gathered a large crowd. Meanwhile, the Shivsena-led Shinde faction and BJP workers arrived at the spot and demanded action against the responsible person and a fair investigation into the matter.
The police said they were informed by locals about the accident. They took her to Civil Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. The post-mortem was performed in the hospital. The driver of the JCB ran away after chaos at the scene.
Police inspector Ravindra Phadtare said, “During the preliminary investigation, it was learned that she was hit by the bucket of the JCB and died on the spot. She suffered serious injuries and succumbed to her injuries. The bucket was moving and accidentally hit her, resulting in her collapse. At the time of the news going to press, the process of filing an FIR is ongoing against the driver of the JCB.”
Amit Mishra, a local activist, said that preventive measures are not being followed by the concerned authorities, and the locals continue to protest against the shifting of the garbage station from here for a long time, but it is not being done. Following the incident, the locals became angry and pelted stones at the JCB, Poklane, and other vehicles. The staff of the dumping ground and the driver of the JCB fled the scene after the accident.
