A new twist has taken place in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin put pressure on Ukraine through US President Donald Trump, which has led to the 30 -day ceasefire of Ukrainian President Volodimir Jailonsky.
Now that Ukraine has agreed to the ceasefire, Putin has placed several conditions in front of the US. Their demand is that the US should accept these conditions and also put pressure on Ukraine, only then the Russia will finalize the ceasefire.
Putin’s biggest demand – Ukraine does not get NATO membership
Russian President Putin has asked the US and NATO to guarantee that Ukraine would not get NATO membership.
Putin’s major demands:
- Ukraine should never be included in NATO.
- NATO should not extend its expansion to Eastern Europe and neighboring countries of Russia.
- The armies of NATO countries should not be deployed in Ukraine.
“Russia wants America and NATO to promise that they will not increase their influence in its neighboring countries. The attack on Ukraine was also for this reason. “
Russia’s concern is that if NATO connects Ukraine with itself, its boundaries will be threatened.

Russia’s second huge demand – American recognition to 4 areas captured
Russia has placed another important condition –
America believes that Crimea and four other areas of Ukraine are part of Russia.
Possible Russian Area:
- Crimeia (under Russia’s control since 2014)
- Donnetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizia and Kherason (Russian occupied areas in 2022)
“Putin wants the US to consider these four occupied areas as a valid part of Russia, only then they will move towards ceasefire.”
Recently, there was a meeting of Ukraine and US officials in Saudi Arabia, in which Jailonsky agreed to the ceasefire, but the new conditions of Russia have complicated it.
Trump administration ceasefire policy – two objectives clear
Till now the US has not said on what basis it wants a ceasefire from Russia. But two main reasons are being considered:
- Improving business relationship with Russia.
- Powering a peace agreement with Ukraine.
The US strategy is that apart from Saudi Arabia, Turkey should also be included in the talks.
