As seen in the video, the man and his wife are standing in a checkout queue at the D-Mart store. Suddenly, another man asks him to speak Marathi. “Hindi hi bolenge (I will speak Hindi only),” he says. When the other man directs him to speak Marathi again, he says, “Nahi bolte (I won’t speak).” “Social media pe dalo…ye galat tarika hai tumhara…(Post it on social media…this is wrong),” he adds. A scuffle erupts between the two as others calm them down. “Mere se bina puche ye video nahi bana sakta (He cannot make the video without my consent),” the man further said.
Meanwhile, social media users gave mixed reactions to the video. Some said if a person is residing in Maharashtra, they must speak Marathi, while others argued that one should be allowed to speak the language they know best.
This video comes a few months after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) thrashed an Airtel manager in Pune’s Wakadewadi over his mandatory Hindi-speaking diktat at the office.
Reportedly, Airtel employees were asked to mandatorily speak Hindi at the office. If they spoke in Marathi, they would be fired from their job, they were told. Maharashtrian employees were not given holidays on festivals and their salaries were also not paid for the last three months. The employees then complained about their situation to the MNS. The MNS workers then barged into the Airtel office in Wakadewadi and thrashed the manager.
