Pune Pub Cancels New Year Party After Controversy Over Sending Invites With Condom And ORS |
A day after the row over a pub in Pune sent ORS and condoms to regular people in a new year party invite, the pub cancelled the party.
While pubs and restaurants bring out several attractive offers to attract consumers on New Year’s Eve celebrations, a pub in Pune has stoked a controversy by sending condoms and ORS with the invite for parties. The unusual invitation has sparked widespread outrage, prompting the police to intervene and record statements from the invitees.
A restaurant-cum-pub located in Mundhwa, Pune, sent objectionable invitations to its regular customers, mostly youngsters, on the occasion of New Year. The invitations were accompanied by condoms and ORS.
Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Pradesh Yuvak Congress has filed a complaint with Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, urging strict action against the cafe management. The complaint noted that the pub’s actions are unacceptable and go against Pune’s educational and cultural traditions.
Here’s what cops said
“The distribution of condoms with party invitations conveys wrong messages to youngsters and creates misconceptions and bad habits in society. Pune, known as the educational and cultural hub of the country, has been damaged by such ‘cheap publicity’ stunts. Take strict action against the cafe management, and establish a strict set of rules to prevent such incidents in the future,” the complaint added.
The pub had, however, stated that it is not a crime to distribute condoms, and they are doing it to increase awareness. They also said that they regularly distribute condoms and sanitary napkins to create awareness. Now they have cancelled the event.
Speaking with media, Senior Police Inspector Nilkanth Jagtap at Mundhwa police station, said “The Pub head sent an advisory to the invitees ahead of the party. The advisory urged people to use helmets, keep hydrated, and avoid ‘drink and drive’. This was for the safety precautions during New Year’s Eve. Along with this advisory, the pub management has also sent some helmets to its selected invitees and a goody bag which included a packet of condoms. This was sent to around 40 guests who are regular to the pub and were expected to attend the New Year party.”
The whole incident came to light after one of the guests took photos of this gift packet and posted it on Facebook which resulted in public outrage.
The Mundhwa police then took statements of some of the guests and the management to enquire about it and issued notices.
