Protest in support of monarchy
There is a big movement in Nepal these days demanding the return of the monarchy. On Friday, there were violent clashes between the monarchy supporters and the police in the capital Kathmandu. Curfew had to be imposed in some areas when the situation worsened. However, the curfew was lifted from the eastern part of Kathmandu on Saturday morning.
Incidents of violence and arson
On Friday, protesters pelted stones in Tinkun area, attacked the office of a political party, set several vehicles on fire and looted the shops. Two people, including a TV cameraman, died in the clashes. The army had to be called to control the situation.
105 protesters arrested
According to the Kathmandu District Administration Office, the curfew imposed at 4:25 pm on Friday was removed at 7 am on Saturday. During the violence, 105 protesters who damaged homes and vehicles have been arrested.
Leading and demanding demonstrations
The protesters are demanding the restoration of monarchy and Hindu nation in Nepal. This movement became more fierce when leader Durga Prasad started moving towards Parliament House in a bulletproof vehicle. The arrested people include Rashtriya Prajatantra Party General Secretary Dhawal Shamsher Rana and Central Member Ravindra Mishra.
Police attack and public property damage
According to the Kathmandu District Police Range, the main conspirator prank is still absconding behind this violence. 53 policemen, 22 armed forces personnel and 35 protesters were injured in the clashes. 14 buildings were set on fire, 9 were damaged, 9 government and 6 private vehicles were also damaged. Media houses such as Kantipur television and Annapurna media were also attacked.
History of monarchy and recent reference
The 240 -year -old monarchy was abolished by the Parliament’s decision in Nepal in 2008 and the country was declared a secular democratic Republic. But since then, supporters of the monarchy have been demanding its restoration. The movement intensified again after former King Gyanendra appealed to the public for support in a video message given on democracy day. On March 9, a big rally was also taken out in support of the former king.
