Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh): A protest erupted in Jabalpur after the Supreme Court confirmed wards of cash found ar Delhi HC judge Yashwant Verma‘s residence during scandal on Tuesday. Several citizens and groups took to street, demanding an FIR against him on Tuesday.
The protesters are demanding an FIR against Justice Varma and insisting that a fair probe should be conducted against him where he should be treated like a regular citizen.
Protesters called for an investigation by top agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) instead of an internal inquiry.
People held posters and raised slogans, questioning corruption in the judiciary. The Citizen Consumer Guidance Forum and other organisations took part in the protest.
They argued that judges of the Supreme Court, High Court, and lower courts should be investigated by independent agencies, just like common citizens.
Protesters also announced that they would write to the Chief Justice of India and the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, asking for strict action and a fair investigation. They demanded the removal of the in-house inquiry system for judges.
The case
The outrage comes after ₹15 crore in burnt cash was found at Justice Verma’s residence in Delhi. He denied any connection to the money, claiming he was being framed.
The cash was reportedly recovered after a fire broke out in the bungalow of Justice Yashwant Varma.
Following this, the Supreme Court stopped him from handling judicial work, and further investigations are ongoing.
