Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann made a strong attack on the National Agriculture Policy proposed by the Central Government during the assembly session. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress MLAs appeared united on this issue. All the MLAs criticized the draft policy and passed a condemnation resolution.

AAP and Congress targeted central government

Although the Punjab Legislative Assembly is often seen to have a sharp political conflict between AAP and Congress, but MLAs of both parties were seen standing together on this issue. Two BJP MLAs Ashwani Sharma and Jangilal Mahajan were not present in the assembly during this important debate.

The AAP government described the National Policy on Agriculture Marketing of the Central Government as anti -farmer and alleged that it violates the rights of the state government. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said that Agriculture Marketing is a matter of state list and it is wrong to interfere with the Central Government. He said, “We strongly oppose this policy and consider it anti -farmer.”

Congress supports the proposal

This condemnation proposal of the AAP government was supported by all Congress MLAs including Congress Leader of Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa. He said that the Congress is with the state government to protect the interests of farmers.

Accused of benefiting private companies

The MLAs described the draft of the central government as benefiting private companies. He said that if this draft is implemented, then private companies will be promoted in marketing of agricultural products and Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) will become irrelevant at the state level.

Significantly, in Punjab itself, three agricultural laws were the most opposed. Farmers of Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh agitated for more than a year on the borders of Delhi. Finally Prime Minister Narendra Modi had to withdraw these laws.

Now, there is a strong opposition in Punjab on the new agriculture policy, which is clear that this issue will be further hot in the coming time.
