News India Live, Digital Desk: After the Pahalgam terror attack, the government, taking strict action, has illegally investigated foreign nationals living in India and excluded them from the country. Meanwhile, the fact came out that foreign nationals had shown documents like Aadhaar card, PAN card and ration cards as their identity. In view of this, the government has made it clear that these documents are not evidence of Indian citizenship.
Aadhaar, PAN and Ration Card only for administrative use
According to the government, Aadhaar card, PAN card and ration cards are issued for administrative needs. UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) has also made it clear that the Aadhaar card is considered only as evidence of identity and residence, not as evidence of citizenship. Similarly, PAN card is used in tax related matters and ration cards are used for distribution of food grains.
Considered documents of citizenship only
The government has considered the birth certificate and residence certificate as the real evidence of citizenship. The birth certificate issued by the competent authorities under the Birth and Death Certificate Act, 1969 confirms the birth of a person in India, which proves his citizenship. Similarly, the residence certificate confirms that a person has been living in a specific state or union territory for a long time, which proves citizenship more strongly.
These documents are considered necessary to prove citizenship during government jobs, passport applications or courts. The government has also released a list of legitimate documents of citizenship to maintain transparency and clarity in the confirmation of citizenship.
