Professor Booked For Harassing Female Students In Gwalior University; Student Protest Video Surfaces | FP Photo

Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): A case has been registered against a professor at Gwalior’s Raja Mansingh Tomar Music and Arts University for allegedly harassing girl students, as reported by Jhansi Road police on Sunday.

According to police, the accused professor has been identified as Sajan Kurian Mathew, who has been held accused in similar cases earlier also.

On Saturday, several university students, along with ABVP members, staged a protest inside the university. They accused Prof. Mathew misbehaved with girl students and sent inappropriate messages on their phones. 

ABVP stage sit-in at SP office

The members of the student group Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) submitted a complaint to the university and held a sit-in protest at the SP office itself, demanding an FIR. After this, police registered a case against the professor.

After a formal complaint was filed, an internal investigation committee was formed at the university to look into the matter.

Notably, Prof. Mathew’s wife, Pratima Mathew, is an Additional Superintendent of Police in Madhya Pradesh.

Investigation on 

The incident reportedly took place on March 26, when students from the Fine Arts Department alleged that Prof. Mathew, who is also the head of the department, used abusive language and sent messages late at night. 

When ABVP student leaders protested inside the university, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Smita Sahastrabuddhe tried to calm them down and asked for a written complaint. However, the students insisted on immediate action.

Additional SP Gwalior Niranjan Sharma confirmed that an FIR has been registered and the investigation has been launched into the matter. He also stated that Prof. Mathew had faced similar complaints in the past, which were referred to the university’s internal complaints committee.
