Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Thailand: from cultural exchange to BIMSTEC summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi these days is on a two-day visit to South-Eastern Asian country Thailand. During this, she met the Thai Prime Minister Partagtarn Shinavatra and presented her and her husband a gift made from Indian handicrafts. Prime Minister Modi also met the Emperor and Queen of Thailand and handed him a memento related to India’s cultural heritage.

Gifts handed over to Thai king and queen

Prime Minister Modi presented the brass statue of Sarnath Buddha to the King Maha Vajiralongkor Fra Vajiraklaochayhua of Thailand, while the queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalakshana presented a brokened silk shawl from Varanasi to Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalakshana.

  • Sarnath Buddha idol: This idol reflects the craft tradition of Bihar and alives images of secret and pala carpet art. The calm posture, complex textiles and lotus postures of the idol are its main features.
  • Brocade Shawl: This shawl is a symbol of India’s traditional weaving that has pictures inspired by rural life, festivals and nature. The selection of colors is based on Indian miniature and backwai art, including red, blue, green, yellow, pink and golden colors prominently.

Cultural and strategic discussion between Indo-Thiland

According to a release of the Ministry of External Affairs, the leaders of the two countries exchanged views on shared cultural heritage and discussed measures to further strengthen bilateral relations. The conversation specifically mentioned the remains of Lord Buddha, which were brought from India to Thailand. This initiative has deepened the relationship between the people of the two countries.

India’s role in BIMSTEC summit

Prime Minister Modi attended the 6th BIMSTEC summit held in Bangkok. On this occasion, he welcomed the following announcements:

  • BIMSTEC Bangkok Vision 2030 was adopted.
  • The BIMSTEC maritime transport agreement was signed.
  • The report of the BIMSTEC reputed person group was accepted.
  • All member countries adopted the summit manifesto.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal confirmed this on X (East Twitter) and said that this conference is an important step towards strengthening regional cooperation.

India’s commitment to BIMSTEC region

Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s commitment to further the multi-regional technical and economic cooperation with BIMSTEC member countries. He hoped that these efforts would bring positive changes in the area.

The conference was attended by Bhutan Prime Minister Sharing Tobge, Bangladesh Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, and Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and other leaders.
