Bangkok: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is giving a new shape to the politics of South East Asia at the sixth summit of Bay Pahal (BIMSTEC) of Bengal for multi-regional-technical and economic cooperation. He has placed India in the role of a pillar in that group.

Taking an unusual political step in May 2019, the Prime Minister invited all BIMSTEC leaders at his second swearing -in ceremony. It is clear that this step was now taken with the aim of creating a new group in place of almost inactive ‘SAARC’. It is clear that this step was the result of his ‘neighbor first’ and ‘look at the east’.

India organized the first military exercise of BIMSTEC countries in 2018, called ‘Milex-18’. Its purpose was to combat terrorism and eliminate piracy.

Narendra Modi has always urged ‘BIMSTEC’ to remain the entrance to the Indo-Pacific region. Earlier, at the summit held in 2025, the Prime Minister requested to prepare the BIMSTEC charter.

Significantly, Prime Minister Modi also called for increasing mutual trade in this conference.

It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Modi was sitting next to the Chief Advisor of the Bangladesh government Mohammad Yunus during a dinner organized by the Thai Prime Minister for the heads of BIMSTEC countries.
