Colombo: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently returned home from his visit to Sri Lanka. During this visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the Sri Lankan players who won the ODI World Cup in 1996 in 1996. During this, Prime Minister Modi also discussed special discussion with the players. Prime Minister Modi also shared a video of his visit on his official social media handle.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Sri Lanka’s World Cup winning team, saying, “The aggressive and innovative style of the country has indicated the arrival of T20 cricket.” Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup winning team players Sanath Jayasuriya, Chaminda Vas, Marwan Atapattu, Arvind de Silva, Ravindra Pushpakumara, Upul Chandana, Kumar Dharmasena and Romesh Kaluvithana were present during the meeting with Modi.

According to an official, Prime Minister Modi spoke to the team, saying that India’s 1983 World Cup win and Sri Lanka’s 1996 victory played a transformative role in the global cricket scenario. Prime Minister Modi has admitted that the aggressive and Abhinav style of Sri Lankan cricket in the 1996 World Cup gave birth to T20 cricket in a way.

During his visit to the island nation, Modi remembered India’s visit to Sri Lanka even after the bomb blasts in 1996. He also described it as a strong symbol of sportsmanship and permanent friendship. He said that he had visited Sri Lanka soon after the 2019 terror attacks.

Sri Lankan players and officials requested him to cooperate in the development of high quality cricket grounds in the northern part of Sri Lanka, especially Jaffna, during a meeting with Modi. The cricketers thanked Modi for India’s liberal assistance during the Sri Lankan economic crisis.

The match was played between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans yesterday. Gujarat Titans defeated Hyderabad in this match.
