Mumbai – After Bangladesh imposed 10% import duty on Indian onions from today, onion prices started falling rapidly in the market of Lasalgaon in Nashik district, the country’s largest onion producing centre. Producers, farmers and traders are in shock due to the reduction in onion price by Rs 300 to Rs 400 per quintal.

Traders at the APMC market of Lasalgaon said that our government has not yet accepted our demand of removing 20% export duty on onion, while neighboring Bangladesh has imposed 10% import duty on Indian onion from today, now onion growers and traders. It’s turn. Will have to face a huge economic shock.

If we want to export onion to Bangladesh, our government has to pay 20% export duty and 10% import duty to Bangladesh, total 30% duty. Who will send onions after paying such high duty?

Meanwhile, due to excess production of onion and decline in export, piles of onions have started appearing in homes.

Two days ago, the price of one quintal (100 kg) onion in Lasalvangi market was around Rs 2,500, but today it has come down to around Rs 1,600. In short, onion which was sold at Rs 25 per kg has started selling at Rs 16 per kg.

Traders and farmers of APMC market of Lasalgaon have appealed to the Central Government to remove 20 percent export duty on onion.
