Kerala nurse sentenced to death in Yemen: Yemen’s President Rashad Al Alimi has approved the death sentence given to Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, who was trapped in Yemen for years. After which Nimisha may be hanged within a month. After this approval, his family living in Kerala is worried. The Government of India has assured that every effort is being made to save Nimisha.
Who is Nimisha?
Nimisha Priya was born in a working class family in Palakkad district of Kerala. After studying nursing, she went to Yemen in 2008. Here she worked as a nurse in different hospitals.
In 2011, she returned to India and married Tommy Thomas, a resident of Idukki, Kerala. After some time, both the husband and wife went back to Yemen and settled in Sana’a, the capital of Yemen. There she gave birth to a daughter.
In 2015, fed up with their low income, Nimisha and Tommy decided to open their own clinic. Since foreigners are not allowed to do business in Yemen, Nimisha started a business with her Yemeni colleague Talal Abdo Mehdi. Local people started coming to the clinic. Thus his clinic started.
What is the allegation against Nimisha?
In 2017, Nimisha Priya was arrested for murdering her business partner Talal Abdo Mehdi and going on the run. After this, a murder case was filed against him in the Yemeni court. Ultimately the court convicted him and sentenced him to death, which was also approved by the President of Yemen on 30 December.
Know what the whole deal is
Talal betrays Nimisha and takes her passport to take over the ownership of the clinic, also exploiting Nimisha. Nimisha sought police help to pursue Talal, a citizen of Yemen, but the police arrested Nimisha and kept her in jail for six days, increasing the harassment of Nimisha by the administration and Talal. To get rid of him and get the passport back, Nimisha gave several injections to Talal, the first time Talal was not harmed but in the second injection Nimisha was accused of killing him.
Nimisha’s husband and daughter are in India
Nimisha came to Kerala with her husband and daughter in 2015. At the same time his business partner Talal also came to India. However, Nimisha returned to Yemen with her friend Talal, while her husband and daughter remained in India. After some time, Nimisha’s husband Tommy Thomas was to go to Yemen with his daughter, but due to the civil war breaking out there, he stayed in India.
India is trying this to save Nimisha
Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the Indian government is trying to provide all kinds of help to Nimisha and her family in this matter. Nimisha’s family is trying to get her released through blood money as per Yemeni rules. In which if money is given to the victim’s family then they can waive the punishment.
