Mumbai Weather Update: Pre-Monsoon Showers Expected This Week, IMD Issues Yellow Alert For Rain And Thunderstorms | File Image
After days of intense heat and humidity, Mumbaikars can expect some relief as the weather department has predicted pre-monsoon showers this week. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Yellow Alert for rainfall and thunderstorms for several districts in Maharashtra, which includes Mumbai and it’s metropolitan regions like Thane and Palghar.
As per IMD’s weather report of Sunday, May 4, for the next 48 hours, Mumbai city and suburbs will have partly cloudy skies with possibility of light rains/thundershower towards night or early mornings. The maximum and minimum temperatures will be 33°C and 26°C respectively.
“There are western disturbances approaching the region, which are dipping low pulling in the moisture. This pre-monsoon activity results in rainfall. Gujarat state is expected to recieve more rainfall and as a result northern Maharashtra is more prominently expected to recieve rainfall. Mumbai will also expected to witness pre-monsoon showers around May 6 and 7,” IMD Mumbai scientist, Sushma Nair said.
“Although the rains are less likely to give relief from the humidity, it will give relief from the heat”, Nair said.
As per the IMD’s district weather forecast and warning issued on Sunday for the next five days, the districts which prominently have Yellow Alert for rainfall and thunderstorms include Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nashik, Pune, Satara, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Ahilyanagar and the Vidharbha region.
Kalpana Mate, a resident of Navi Mumbai said, “The heat has been unbearable. Many people are suffering from heat strokes. If we get rainfall, there will be temporary relief. The children and elders are suffering more due to the intense heat and humidity since March.”
The IMD’s outlook for Summer 2025 had predicted ‘above normal’ temperatures for the season across the country. In Maharashtra, cites like Nagpur and Pune have already seen maximum temperature of the season crossing 43°C. While, Mumbai has witnessed two heatwaves this season so far.
Although, the maximum temperature in Mumbai did not cross 40°C in April, the city experienced high humidity. Mumbai and MMR are expected to experience above normal temperatures for the remaining summer season too.
Meanwhile, there have been messages viral on social media that the an high alert for temperature to reach 55°C in May has been issued. While another viral message claims that pre-monsoon activity is observed near Kerala and monsoon will arrive soon. The IMD has clarified that there are no such warnings or weather report issued.
