Mumbai: The pre-monsoon rains in Mumbai have brutally exposed the city’s preparedness for the monsoon. On Tuesday, from 8 pm to 11 pm, the western suburbs received around 26 mm, eastern suburbs received 15 mm and the city area received 12 mm of rainfall with thunderstorms. The brief but heavy rainfall got several roads waterlogged and brought traffic to a grinding halt.
With the monsoon yet to arrive, the menace the pre-monsoon rains created on Tuesday has raised severe questions on pre-monsoon activities by the BMC, especially the storm water drains desilting, completing the road works, and how Mumbai will brace the monsoon.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has already confirmed that the pre-monsoon rainfall activity will intensify further, considering the cyclonic winds and the onset of monsoon will be early this year.
