Huge crowd expected in Mahakumbh 2025
More than 40 crore devotees are likely to attend Mahakumbh this year. The Uttar Pradesh government has made extensive arrangements to run it smoothly. However, the activity of cyber criminals amid the increasing number of devotees has raised concerns.
Cyber crime: New challenge for devotees
With the prevalence of digital payments, the use of UPI and QR codes has become common in the Mahakumbh. But through this the cases of fraud are also increasing. Fraudsters are targeting devotees by using fake QR codes and donation links.
Precautions:
- Use only trusted QR codes.
- Prefer cash payment, especially when transacting with unknown sellers.
- Check the validity of any donation link or online request.
Protection from fake websites and advertisements
First-time pilgrims to Maha Kumbh may be lured by cheap flights and unrealistic hotels. Scammers try to lure people by creating fake websites.
What to do?
- Book only through government portals or authorized websites like IRCTC.
- Verify authenticity of hotels before paying.
- Avoid paying in advance.
Dangers associated with public Wi-Fi
Using unsecured public Wi-Fi at the Maha Kumbh Mela can put your personal data at risk. Scammers can access your device through these networks.
Safety measures:
- Use mobile data instead of public Wi-Fi.
- Use strong passwords and antivirus software on devices.
Latest cases of fraud: need for vigilance
Recently, a 75-year-old man from Mumbai was duped of Rs 1 lakh while booking tickets and hotels online for the Maha Kumbh Mela. Fake agents contacted them online and got them paid.
How to avoid?
- Use only recognized platforms for booking.
- Avoid contacting unknown numbers.
- Be cautious of suspicious emails and fake offers.
