After Donald Trump in the US, Vladimir Putin in Russia and Georgia Meloni in Italy, there is now a Conservative wave in Germany. The Orthodox alliance, led by Freederick Marts, defeated Chancellor Olaf Sholj in a tough match and took power.

With this victory, the hold of right -wing parties in Germany has become stronger than before.

Freederick Mart’s victory: big upset in Germany

Freederick Mart’s alliance received 28.5% of the votes.
Olaf Sholj’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) got only 16% of the votes – this is their worst performance after World War II.
Chancellor Olaf Sholj accepted the defeat and called it a “disappointing result” for his party.
The election of Germany’s lower house Bundestag (630 seats) showed tremendous polarization.
The election was scheduled in November 2024 after the collapse of Olaf Sholj’s government.

Historical edge of right -wing alternative for Germany (AFD)

The most shocking figure is that the hardcore right -wing party “Alternative for Germany (AFD)” received historical public support.

AFD received 20.5% of the votes, which were only 10.3% in 2021.
This is the first time after World War II that AFD has got such a large number of seats.
This party has been criticizing illegal migrants and European Union (EU) policies.
This is the first time AFD has come into such a strong position in mainstream politics.

Freederick Marts has indicated that they will not combine with AFD, but it will be interesting to see which parties they combine to form their government.

Electoral issues in Germany: Why did the public choose Conservatives?

Slow growth of the economy: Germany’s economy is moving towards recession, causing resentment in the public.
Illegal migrants issue: The number of illegal migrants in Europe has increased rapidly, causing people to be dissatisfied.
Concern over Ukraine War and European unity: People in Germany are divided over the assistance given to the European Union and Ukraine.

In view of these issues, the public decided to hand over power to Freederick Marts and his Conservative Party.

Why is it a challenge to form a government?

No party has come into a clear majority.
Freederic Marts will have to form a coalition government.
They do not want to combine with AFD, but do not match their ideology with other parties.
They may have to compromise with the opposition to run the government.

In the coming weeks, it will be interesting to see which parties Marts form a government and their policies take German politics in which direction.
