US President Donald Trump will soon interact with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The White House confirmed this on Monday. The talks are taking place at a time when Trump recently announced a 10% tariff on goods coming from China. This will be the first time the two leaders will contact directly after this decision.
China hopes for relief, but also threatened to increase tariffs
Mexico and Canada have got some relief after talking to Trump over the tariff controversy, which is now expected to soften China. However, Trump warned China on Monday that if China does not stop sending phentanyl (an intoxicating substance) in the US, the rate of tariff can be increased further.
On the other hand, China has threatened to take up the matter in the World Trade Organization (WTO). The Chinese Ambassador to the United Nations Fu Kang said that the upcoming security council meeting could prove to be important for both countries. In this meeting, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio can discuss major bilateral issues.
Stress deepens on America-China relations
Chinese Ambassador Fu Kang said that the decision to impose a tariff of Trump violates the WTO rules, and that is why China is lodging a complaint against it. He described America-China cooperation on issues related to environment, drugs, terrorism and artificial intelligence (AI).
Partial relief in tariff to Mexico and Canada
The Trump administration also imposed tariffs on Canada and Mexico, but both countries have got some relief after talks.
- Mexico: President Claudia Shinbam promised to deploy 10,000 national guards on the northern border after talks with Trump to prevent drug smuggling in the US.
- Canada: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also spoke to Trump and described it as positive. The US has decided to give a 30 -day tariff exemption to Canada.
Are America-China relations moving towards solution?
Now everyone’s eyes are on Trump-Jinping talks. This dialogue will decide whether the growing trade war between the two countries will stop, or the US and stringent economic restrictions.
