Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh): A fraudster posing as a police officer tricked an elderly woman into handing over her jewelery worth ₹4 lakh, as reported by police on Saturday.
The accused allegedly covered his face to avoid identification, but was caught on CCTV riding a motorcycle near the crime scene.
The incident occurred on Saturday morning near Kamania Gate under the Kotwali police station area jurisdiction.
The victim was identified as Jyoti Jain, a resident of Deori in Sagar district. She was visiting her relatives in Jabalpur when the conman approached her, and scammed her into losing her jewelery.

According to the victim, the accused exploited her fear of increasing thefts and robberies in the area. The accused reportedly displayed a fake police ID card to gain the woman’s trust. He convinced her to remove her jewelery and give it to him to keep it at a safer place. He then replaced her real ornaments with fake ones.
The woman realized she had been deceived only after checking the packet containing the fake jewelery. However, by this time the fraudster had fled the scene.
According to Kotwali police station in-charge Bhuvan Deshmukh, they have retrieved CCTV footage of the suspect riding a motorcycle and are investigating the case using the vehicle’s registration number and input from locals.
“We are actively investigating the case and using all available leads to identify and apprehend the culprit,” he added.
