Pope Leo XIV, the 267th pontiff of the Catholic Church, has made his debut on social media platform X with a message of peace to his global followers.

In his inaugural post on the microblogging site, the new Pope shared a message of unity, writing: “Peace be with you all! This is the first greeting spoken by the Risen Christ, the Good Shepherd. I would like this greeting of peace to resound in your hearts, in your families, and among all people, wherever they may be, in every nation and throughout the world.”

X’s Global Government Affairs team welcomed the Catholic leader to the platform, stating: “A heartfelt welcome to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on X! We are deeply honoured to have you join the Global Town Square.”

In the hours following the account’s creation, thousands have followed Pope Leo XIV on X.

American Cardinal Robert Prevost, who was elected as the 267th pontiff last Thursday, has chosen the papal name Leo XIV, as announced by a senior cardinal deacon.

The 69-year-old Chicago native has made history as the first American pope and is regarded as a diplomatic figure within the church.

His election came following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, when 133 cardinals—the church’s highest-ranking clergy—gathered in a secret conclave in Rome to select a new leader for the Catholic Church.
