After the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 is passed by Parliament, its political influences are coming to light. While the Bharatiya Janata Party has carried forward one of its major agenda through this bill, its negative impact has reached the NDA allies Janata Dal (United). Many Muslim leaders of JD-U are keeping distance from the party and so far five leaders have resigned. According to sources, more Muslim leaders and workers can leave the party in the coming days.
Fear of changing political equation in Bihar
This situation can cause a crisis for JD-U before the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar. Muslim voters play a decisive role in many assembly seats in the state. Till now a large section of Muslim society has been supporting Nitish Kumar, but the continuous resignations of Muslim leaders may weaken this support. Opposition parties are preparing to capitalize on this opportunity and are targeting Nitish Kumar’s role regarding the Waqf Bill.
Opposition allegations: Nitish equally responsible
The opposition says that the responsibility of the BJP in passing this bill, the same role has been played by Nitish Kumar. The bill could be passed only with the support of JD-U and Chandrababu Naidu’s party TDP in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Congress and other opposition parties appealed to Nitish to oppose the bill, but he supported.
These leaders resigned
After the bill was passed, Raju Nayar first resigned from the party. After this, Tabrej Siddiqui Alig, Mohammad Shahnawaz Malik, Mohammad Qasim Ansari and Nadeem Akhtar also broke away from the party. Raju Nayar wrote in his letter that he is extremely hurt by the support of the Waqf Amendment Bill and is leaving the party, describing it against the rights of Muslims.
Party cleaning and damage control
After these resignations, JD-U has started under damage control. The party’s national spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan Prasad said that some members resigned were not in any position in the organization and these resignations are fake. He claimed that the party is fully with the decision of the NDA and the bill is in the interest of poor Muslims.
Displeasure with ignoring suggestions
Senior JD-U leader Ghulam Rasul Balliavi and Bihar Shia Waqf Board Chairman Syed Afzal Abbas said that while passing the bill, several important suggestions made by community leaders were ignored. The two leaders had made several suggestions before the Joint Parliamentary Committee while preparing the draft, but were not included. However, he did not directly criticize the party leadership.
