Police Undertake Combing Operation, Section 144 Imposed; Rioters Being Identified & Arrested | X | ANI
Nagpur (Maharashtra), March 17: The police has undertaken a combing operation in Nagpur’s Mahal area after violent clashes erupted between two groups allegedly over demands of removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. There are also reports that Section 144 has been imposed in the area as a large crowd gathered in the Mahal area of Nagpur following tensions erupted after the dispute between two groups. There are also reports that the violence erupted after rumours of burning of holy book spread in the area.
Police personnel are urging people to vacate the area after the violence escalated. They have also asked everyone not to step out of their houses if not necessary. Section 144 has been imposed, restricting public gatherings and unnecessary movement in the area.
Vehicles Torched, Stones Pelted
Tensions broke out in Mahal area on Monday night over the Aurangzeb issue. The situation escalated into violence, with stone pelting and vehicles being torched. Explosions were also heard from the burning vehicles. The police said that a photo was burned after which people gathered in the area demanding action into the matter. The violence took place at around 8 PM in the area.
Nagpur Police Commissioner Issues Statement
Nagpur Police Commissioner Dr Ravinder Singal told ANI, “The situation is peaceful right now. A photo was burned following which people gathered, they made a request and we even took action in this respect. They had even come to my office to meet me. They were told that an FIR has been lodged based on the names they mentioned and action will be taken against them…This (today’s violence) incident occurred around 8-8.30 pm. Not many vehicles have been torched. We are taking an assessment of the same. Two vehicles have been torched and stone pelting had occurred…Police is undertaking combing action and those involved are being identified and arrested…We have imposed Sec 144 and everyone has been told to not step out unnecessarily or take law in their hands. Do not believe rumours. Except this area, the entire city is peaceful…”
AMO Issues Statement
Maharashtra CMO said, “Police administration is handling the situation after stone pelting and tense situation in Mahal area of Nagpur. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has appealed that citizens should fully cooperate with the administration in this situation. We are constantly in touch with the police administration and citizens should cooperate with them. Nagpur is a peaceful and co-operative city. This has been a permanent tradition of Nagpur. In such a case, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has appealed not to believe any rumours and give full cooperation to the administration.”
